If Romanians are asked to vote on the same day for the parliamentary elections and for outlawing UDMR, voter turnout will increase, and “Romania’s territory will not be divided”, Funar told a press conference Friday.
"It will be a tough exam for the president of Romania, as well as for other political parties. If Basescu doesn’t respond to our request, and doesn’t organize the national referendum, he can say goodbye to a second mandate,” Funar said.
According to Funar, the Greater Romania Party’s request is a “difficult exam” for the democrat liberals, for the ruling Liberal Party as well as for the social democrats and the conservatives, “as each of them cooperated with the Magyar Union in the ruling of the country”.
Funar said the Union will have no representatives in the Parliament, in the Government as well as in the local public administrations if the referendum is organized, and if Romanians vote to outlaw the Magyar Democratic Union.
The far-rightists’ request comes after plans to organize local referendums on November 30 in the central counties of Mures, Covasna and Harghita, which, according to Funar, aim at “declaring the autonomy of the Szekler County on December 1, 2008”.
Funar warned of the possibility of the creation of an autonomous state containing the three counties “similar to the Kosovo model”.
According to a draft decision on the organization of a local referendum in the Szekler County, citizens are asked to say YES or NO to the question: “Do you agree with the modification of the territorial border of the county… according to the legislative initiative “The autonomous status of the Szekler County”, in order to create the autonomous administrative territorial unit called Szekler County, bound to include the commune (town)… to this administrative territorial unit?”
This draft decision, proposed by the Standing Committee of the National Szekler Council, stipulates local referendums will take place on November 30, on the same day of the parliamentary elections.
