Romania’s Tarom Carried 312,300 Passengers In 1Q 2009

Romanian airline Tarom carried 312,300 passengers between January and March this year, 16.3% less than in the same period last year, according to data of the Association of European Airlines (AEA).

In the first quarter, the company’s average occupancy rate was 46.1%, 13.2 points less than in the first quarter of 2008, according to an AEA report.

In March, Tarom transported 109,800 people, 24.1% lower than in March 2008. The occupancy rate for the month was 44.2%, 14.6 points lower than March last year.

In Europe, airliners carried 48.4 million passengers in the first three months of this year, a 10.8% decrease. The occupancy rate for the period was 60.7%, 3.2 points lower than in 2008.

The largest companies by number of passengers were Lufthansa (11.5 million), Air France (10.6 million) and British Airways (7 million).

The top three companies by aircraft occupancy rate are KLM (76.8%), Iberia (76.5%) and Air France (74.5%).

AEA’s register includes 34 European airlines, which transport 370 million passengers and 7 million tons of goods annually, using 2,600 aircraft which fly to 615 destinations in 165 countries. AEA member companies have a total turnover of EUR78 billion per year.
