Romanian Research Sector Union Leader On Hunger Strike

Romania’s research union leader Radu Minea went on hunger strike Monday in front of the president’s office building demanding the independence of the research sector, a separate budget for research and the revision of all laws in the sector passed since 2005.

Minea told MEDIAFAX Monday he resorted to this type of protest as it was the only thing he could do harming himself alone. He also said he does not expect authorities to care about his protest.

Asked about the education pact signed by President Traian Basescu and political parties, Minea said “it is nothing but a pile of rubbish and no specialists of the research sector would have signed this pact”.

Minea said the research sector in Romania has been dead since 2005, when the budget for research was engulfed by that for education and "the money is now spent chaotically and research gets nothing”.

The union leader added the research sector is nearly extinct and unionists demand independence from the Education Ministry.

On Wednesday, union leaders will picket the headquarters of the Education Ministry and the National  Scientific Research Authority.
