The decree must be passed by the General Council of Bucharest’s Town Hall, with the title to be awarded for the patriarch’s “social-philanthropic activity” and for his role in the building of the People’s Salvation Cathedral.

The decree will be debated during next week’s General Council meeting.

“The title of honorary citizen of the Municipality of Bucharest is granted to Mr. Dan Ilie Ciobotea, for his social-philanthropic, liturgical and missionary activity in the country and abroad,” reads the draft project which will be debated by Bucharest councilors.
