The authorities in Bucharest should control wages in the public sector more efficiently to avoid additional pressure on an economy that is overheating, said IMF senior regional representative for Romania and Bulgaria Juan Jose Fernandez-Ansola.

Fernandez-Ansola said salary growths in the private sector over the past years led to an increase in the state employee’s wages, due to workforce shortages.

Romania’s net average salary fell 5.5% to 1,134 lei (EUR1-RON3.5614) in real terms in February 2008, compared with January 2008, the National Institute for Statistics said in a statement.

The average net salary in Romania rose 20.5% on year in February.

The Institute said wages in public sector fluctuate during the year, mainly due to bonuses and incentives given to employees during holidays.

The country’s prognosis commission sees the average net salary at RON1,181 in 2008, up 13.2% compared to 2007.
