Romanian President Traian Basescu was under siege Saturday at the events dedicated to the National Day, as tens of people wished to talk to him or shake his hand.

The head of state attended the laying of flowers and wreaths at the mounted Mihai Viteazu statue in Alba Iulia. Next came a similar ceremony at the statue gallery around de Union Hall and a parade by the Honor Guard.

At the end of the ceremony, Basesu was besieged by the crowd, as tens of people were trying to talk to him or shake his hand. The head of state went by foot to the Orthodox Cathedral, where he met with Alba Iulia Archbishop Andrei.
 
Upon entering the cathedral, Basescu was met by a folk music band, led by Horea commune mayor Corneliu Olar, the democrat liberal candidate for the Chamber of Deputies in the Apuseni Mountains constituency.
 
President Traian Basescu attended the events organized on the occasion of the National Day of Romania in historic landmark city Alba Iulia.
 
The Romanian Ministry of Defense will organize ceremonies celebrating the National Day of Romania in Bucharest as well as Alba Iulia. The ceremonies will involve 2,000 soldiers from the ministries of defense and interior, the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Protection and Guard Service.
 
The Ministry of Defense said early November that the costs for all activities celebrating December 1 are estimated to reach some 4,000,000 lei (EUR1 = RON3.7794), but the exact sum will be calculated after the event.
 
The Ministry of Defense announced that its representatives will participate, at the request of local authorities, in the ceremonies organized on the National Day in county seats and in localities where troops are stationed, as well as those with memorial monuments and localities with special significance in the achievement of the country’s Great Union.
 
According to the Ministry of Defense, in Bucharest, the ceremonies will start at 09:00 local time, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Carol Park, with the laying o flowers and wreaths.
 
A military parade will be organized starting with 11:00 in Arcul de Triumf Square.
