Romanian Presidential Election Prelim Results At GMT0800: Basescu – 32.42%, Geoana – 31.17%

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 32.42% of the votes in the first round of elections and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 31.17%, according to preliminary results released Tuesday by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 99.92% of poling stations.

Liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.02% of the votes.

Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.55%), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (3.83%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.18%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.91%).

The other candidates earned less than 1%, according to the preliminary results released by the Electoral Bureau. Green Party candidate Remus Cernea obtained 0.62 %, socialist Constantin Rotaru – 0.45 %, independent Eduard Manole – 0.35%, Ecologist Party candidate Ovidiu Iane – 0.23% and independent Constantin Potarca earned 0.21%.
