"I think this is a time of fulfillment. I want to thank the delegates at the end of a difficult road for having kept their honor and dignity and for believing in this goal,” said AP president and former head of state Emil Constantinescu before the congress meeting.

Constantinescu also said this is the time for him to retire from politics.

Liberal leader Calin Tariceanu said the merger is necessary to rebuild united right-winged forces in Romania to seriously compete with the left and to win elections.

"This merger is not an option, but a necessity. We need to rebuild a united right wing to be stronger. This merger is a necessity to a modern, European Romania,” Tariceanu said.

He added the Romanian political scene is evolving into poles of power, and liberals must oppose the stronger left wing created in the social democrat-conservative alliance.
