The screen, estimated to be as high as an eight-story building, was set up Monday in the hall that will host the IMAX movie theater. It has 398 seats and a 20,000 Watt sound system. According to Cinema City International, the hall was set up in three weeks.

„The IMAX effect is a combine effect – the hall, which allows a certain type of visibility, the projector – which rolls the 17 mm film and the screen – which allows peripheral view. For each particular IMAX hall there is a specially designed sound system,” said Corina Gonteanu, marketing director of Cinema City Romania.

The IMAX projector installed in Bucharest weighs one ton and costs some EUR2 million, compared to the classic 35 mm projector, which costs around $40,000. The lamps generate 15,000 Watts of light.

IMAX technology (Image Maximum) is based on a special type of film, 70 mm, and the double-lens projection system and 3D digital audio systems create an authentic 3D experience, allowing the simultaneous projection of two film reels at 24 frames per second.

The new movie theater complex includes 21 movies screens and some 4,300 seats – 17 standard halls, three VIP halls and the IMAX cinema.

In Europe there are some 70 IMAX movie theaters. Cinema City owns, in the countries where it is present, the exclusive license for the operation of IMAX movie theaters. At the moment, the company operates eight IMAX movie theaters: five in Poland, one in the Czech Republic, one in Bulgaria and one in Hungary.
