Romania’s First 4-Mo Wine Imports, More Than Double Vs. Exports

Wine imports saw a 49.1% increase in the first four months of the year, while exports rose 11%, compared with the same period in 2007.

The wine imported in the first four months of the year is rated at EUR8.78 million, while exported wine is rated at EUR5.67 million, according to the ministry’s data.

During January- April 2007, wine imports reached EUR5.35 million, while exports rose to EUR4.58 million and mostly targeted Germany, Russia, Estonia, the United States, Italy, Canada and Bulgaria.

Romania mainly imported wine from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the Republic of Moldova or Chile.

Basil Zarnoveanu, head of the Association of Winemakers and Exporters in Romania (APEV), said 95% of imported wine is cheap and comes from Spain and Italy.

Romania’s main winemakers are Vincon Vrancea, Murfatlar, Cotnari and Jidvei.
