Romanian PM Says Troop Detachment Is Not A Govt Matter

The detachment of Romanian troops to Chad was not a Government decision, nor a topic in the talks with French president Nicolas Sarkozy, but it is mentioned in a memorandum sent to the High Council for National Defense (CSAT) for approval, said Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

He indicated that Romania is part of the joint European defense policy and, in this respect, it is always responsibly analyzing the ability to contribute to missions under the European banner. He also stated that a concrete and final decision on this matter is made, as always, though legal procedures.

Tariceanu added that CSAT was notified on the matter and he is convinced that the best solution will be decided.

"It is not a decision of the Government, but a memorandum forwarded to CSAT for approval," Tariceanu said.
