The committees approved the budget with 20 votes for, 14 against and four abstentions.
Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu said during committee debates that the budget contains funding to build indoor restrooms for the remaining 1,489 schools which still do not have them, a program to give students tablets and the construction of 193 kindergartens.
The committees also admitted several amendments to the ministry’s budget. One amendment, proposed by Social Democrat Party (PSD) chairman Liviu Dragnea, supplements the ministry’s government loans and commitment credits by RON140 millions each.
Romania's government on Friday adopted the 2019 state budget, built on an economic growth projection of 5.5%, which critics said is overly optimistic, and targeting a deficit of 2.55% of gross domestic product.
According to the schedule decided by the Parliament’s standing bureaus on Saturday, the amendments will be reviewed by parliamentary committees on Monday, with the final vote in the combined chambers scheduled for Wednesday, starting with 16.00 local time.
