Asked to comment on recent statistics indicating a decrease in the number of tourists in Romania in 2009, Udrea said statistics are only based on official data, which, she pointed out, may be distorted by tax evasion. Udrea added her ministry will try to draft its own statistics.

Udrea stressed, however, there is solid proof Romania registered a large number of tourists in 2009, and she mainly referred here to the Black Sea coast and the country’s northern region of Bukovina.

She added the number of Austrian tourists who spent their holidays in Romania in 2009 was larger than that included in Romanian statistics.

„Tax evasion is to blame for incorrect data and statistics,” said Udrea.

„Some say it may even hit 30%,” Udrea said with respect to tax evasion level in the tourism sector.

Udrea underscored that the fiscal measures stipulated in the country’s draft tourism law might also be included in the Fiscal Code.
