"What needs to be done in relation with OMV, with AVAS, needs to be done right now, to avoid endangering the functioning of the plant," Basescu said.

The head of state added the debts are known, as well as the development program, the investments and the future programs.

Asked about the outlook of 550 Oltchim employees to be retired, the President said: "Those who meet retirement criteria in a crisis situation can see their status as a solution."

"As I understand it, 200 employees are already receiving salary and pension, so there is no problem here, and up to 550 employees are already meeting retirement criteria, so they have a source of income. The problem comes with those that do not have any sources of income and have kids in schools, have families to support and should be sent home. Sure, any job is important, but the matter calls for a wise approach from unions and management," Basescu added.

He said in such times the unions and the management need to become partners in order to efficiently support the workers.
