"Romania is disconnected from the oil and gas pipelines and main Pan-European energy transport corridors. This is a matter of national security, therefore, we urge the National Supreme Defense Council and the government to carefully consider such issues," said Diaconescu.
Diaconescu criticized the fact that Romania still lacks both a strategy in the energy sector and a post-accession strategy, although the government made repeated promises in this respect.
Diaconescu stressed that Romania currently is isolated, as far as its energy situation is concerned, thus, it must consider other alternatives, "to avoid paying an economic and political price, which, in time, it will no longer be able to control.”
Bulgaria and Russia signed a deal Friday for the EUR10 billion South Stream pipeline to carry Russian gas to Europe, giving Moscow an even tighter grip on European energy supplies.
