PSD spokesman Radu Moldovan said earlier Monday social democrats will notify the Constitutional Court if any ruling coalition party proposes a candidate for Senate president and the respective candidate wins elections.
Moldovan said that, according to Decision no. 601/2005 of the Court, if the Senate chairman or the Chamber of Deputies speaker is removed from office, only the parliamentary group which held that position is allowed to make a new proposition to fill it.
Former Interior Minister Vasile Blaga on Monday has been elected Senate chairman with 69 votes. His sole contender, opposition-backed Corlatean, garnered 63 votes.
Last week, Mircea Geoana was removed from the office of Senate chairman, after being expelled from the Social Democratic Party.
