Michelin Romania made this decision in the fallout of the global economic crisis, in an attempt to adjust its output to declining demand.

The company previously halted operations at the two plants in December 2008, as well as at its third Victoria plant in Prahova county, southern Romania, but it resumed production early January.

Silvania Michelin employs nearly 1,300 people and provides nearly 600,000 tires of different kinds. RomSteel Cord employs nearly 300 people and produces metal cords, one of the most important elements in tire manufacturing.

Victoria plant, which Michelin bought in 2001, produces tires for cars and trucks under Michelin, BF Goodrich, Kormoran brands.
