Becali’s lawyers filed Wednesday a new request to have the businessman released on probation and the court decided to try it on Aperil 21.

On Tuesday, another lawyer had submitted a request to have Becali released, arguing he should be out of prison to campaign for European Parliament elections, which will be held on June 7, and where Becali is running on behalf of the far-right Greater Romania Party.

The court decided Wednesday the request to annul Becali’s arrest warrant was ungrounded and ordered Becali to pay RON200 in legal expenses. The court decision is final and binding.

Becali, chairman and financer of Steaua Bucharest football club, was arrested for 29 days Friday morning along four of his bodyguards for kidnapping three alleged car thieves.

Becali was placed into custody along Catalin Zmarandescu, Stefan Dediu, Nicolae Dumitrascu and Dumitru Beciu.
