Switzerland Decision To Remove Beggar Slums In Geneva, Administrative Measure-Romanian Embassy

Switzerland’s decision to remove beggar slums in Geneva, in the south-west of the country, which are dwelled mainly by Romanians, is an administrative measure to protect public hygiene, Romanian diplomat in Berne Alexandru Irimia said Wednesday.

He said the situation in Geneva does not bear comparison with the situation of Romanians in Italy, adding the removal of the slums does not automatically involve repatriating the Romanians.

The Romanian Embassy in Berne has not been informed yet of any similar measures taken by the authorities in Switzerland’s capital, Irimia said, mentioning the Romanian officials will ask information on slums removal.

He said however, that Romanian and Geneva officials previously discussed the problem of the Romanian beggars in the city.
