Budget Cuts Will Not Affect National Health Programs – Minister

Romanian health minister Eugen Nicolaescu said that the cut by RON433.7 million in the budget of the Health Ministry in the year’s first budget revision would not affect the country’s national health programs.

However, it will lead to the elimination of vacant positions within the ministry and the subordinate institutions, others than hospitals and clinics. These positions, irrespective of their vacancy, have been financed by the ministry so far.
 
 
“There are nearly 1,000 vacant positions, but they are blocked by the ministry, the public health authorities, the public health inspectorates and so forth. I cannot say that the budget cut is a benefic one, as we will have to limit our expenses,” the minister said.
 
 
The government will reduce budgets for nearly all ministries by a total RON2.6 billion (EUR1= RON3.7617) in the year’s first budget revision.
 
 
The biggest cuts will be in defense, agriculture and healthcare.
 
 
The deficit of the general consolidated budget will be therefore narrowed by 0.4 percentage points, to 2.3% of gross domestic product.
