"I approached regional issues and I held a brief for the evolution of events in the Middle East and worldwide in order to better understand each country’s foreign policy priorities, as well as the way in which Romania and Israel can work together to solve regional issues,” Basescu said.

The head of state added that, during talks with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he approached all core issues for the region.

"The peace process in the Middle East still represents a priority on Romania’s foreign policy agenda. The main political objective in the Middle East targets a just and durable peace between Israelis and Arabs. Therefore, I reconfirmed Romania’s support for the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. Nobody can ask Israel to adopt an approach that can question its own security," Basescu concluded.

Basescu left for Israel on May 31 for an official visit at the invitation of Shimon Peres and was accompanied by Romanian foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu, tourism minister Elena Udrea, presidential adviser for national minorities, Peter Eckstein Kovacs, and deputy Aurel Vainer, representative of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania.

During his stay in Israel, Basescu also visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Jerusalem, the holy places in Jerusalem, and he also met with representatives of the Romanian community in Israel.
