Ion Voicu, head of the Romanian sea search and rescuing agency ARSVOM, said the two divers, employees of private firm Hunter’s Company, were part of a team of four and were filming the wreckage Thursday afternoon.
„Two went in to film and came out, then the other two went in. After about 40 minutes, the first two dove to look for their colleagues who had not come back to the surface,” Voicu said.
Authorities were called in for help when the divers were not found, but search operations were hindered because of high waves and powerful wind. Friday morning, searches were again hindered by unfavorable weather, Voicu said.
He added the two, Catalin Ispas, 26, and Cristian Zarafu, 38, are both experienced divers.
Istanbul-bound Turkish ship Medy, carrying scrap metal, sank on September 1 about four nautical miles off the Romanian Black Sea Coast despite rescue teams’ efforts to save it after the entire crew had been rescued.
