This is Romania’s second medal at the Beijing Olympics after judoka Alina Dumitru won gold in the 48 kg category on Saturday.
Covaliu defeated French Julien Pillet in the small final, 15-11, but missed the qualification in the big final after he was defeated by French Nicolas Lopez, 13-15, in the semifinals.
Covaliu, 30, won gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the world title in individual sabre fencing in Leipzig in 2005, as well as the European title in team sabre in Izmir in 2006.
Covaliu also won silver at the Havana World Championship in 2003, five bronze medals at European Championships (2008, 2007, 2005 – team sabre, 2002, 2001), and two bronze medals at the World Championships in 2001 and 2002.
