Political Parties That Governed Romania After 1990 Share The Credit For NATO Accession

The president said the goal to join NATO made Romanian politics and government more coherent.
"The goal to join NATO brought coherence and direction to the Romanian central administration and political class. At a time when political confusion was still high and we were confronted with a serious economic crisis, NATO’s open door helped Romania overcome those hard times. The road to accession started with the signing of the Peace Partnership in 1994, and accelerated in 1997 with the first democratic change in power in Romania. After the elections in 2000, Romania continued its path to integration, so we can say the credit for Romania’s NATO accession is equally shared by all political parties that governed Romania," Basescu said.
Basescu added parliamentary parties didn’t politicize the country’s goal to join NATO and considered it was a defining move for the country’s democratic and security interests.
