Politicians Accuse President Basescu Of Stalling Uninominal Vote Issue

Hungarian party leader Marko Bela said the president has every right to appeal any law passed by Parliament. Marko added that he does not think the appealed law is unconstitutional.

 

Conservative Sergiu Andon said the president appealed the law to delay its coming into force, as a new battle in the war against the government. Andon told MEDIAFAX that Basescu’s move was highly predictable, moreover since he had announced it “laughing sardonically”. 

 

Andon added the head of state was interested in stalling this time, and not in the successful introduction of the uninominal voting system and used the trick that "25% of all good lawyers use when they need time: raise an exception of unconstitutionality."

 

Social democrat spokesperson Cristian Diaconescu also said the president’s move was predictable and a means to buy more time, stalling until after the referendum he called on the same issue.

 

Vice-president of the far-right Greater Romania Party, or PRM, Lucian Bolcas said the president does not really care about constitutionality issues, but simply wants to block the law for which the government took responsibility.
