“I have been planning to run for Hunedoara mayoralty for several years and I believe this is the right time to do so. As a sportsman, I have proudly represented and promoted my home town throughout the world and now I believe I can do a lot more for people in Hunedoara,” the former boxer said Wednesday.
Leu, 40, currently racecar driver, joined the Conservative Party six years ago. He ran on the behalf of the party for the MEP elections last year.
Early this year, Leu was appointed adviser to communications minister Karoly Borbely.
Leu became Romania’s first world champion in professional boxing in 1997.
