The highways currently under construction in Romania are Bucharest-Ploiesti (the segments Bucharest-Moara Vlasiei and Moara Vlasiei-Ploiesti), Transylvania (the segments Campia Turzii-Gilau and Suplacu de Baracu-Bors), Bucharest-Constanta (Cernavoda-Medgidia and Medgidia-Constanta) and Arad-Timisoara.
According to the document, 42 km of the Transylvania highway will be opened for traffic this year, on the Campia Turzii-Gilau segment. Drivers will be able to access the 42 km through two road nodes. Officials of Bechtel, the company doing the work, said in June that the road nodes might not be completed, but alternative temporary routes would be made available.
Also, 30 km of the Bucharest-Ploiesti highway, which has a total length of 62 km, will be paved with asphalt. Minister Radu Berceanu said in April that the segment will not be operational this year, as it lies between two bridges, which will be completed later.
The document goes on to say that the Bucharest-Ploiesti and Transylvania highways will have „priority” in 2010. The Transports Ministry estimates that 42 km of the Bucharest-Ploiesti highway will be opened in July 2010 and a further 13 km in December 2010. The work on the Transylvania highway, with a total length of 118 km, will also be completed next year.
Berceanu said Tuesday that the price per kilometer for the Campia-Turzii Gilau segment of the Transylvania highway is around EUR12-13 million.
The target date for the completion of the Cernavoda-Constanta (51 km) and Arad-Timisoara (32.2 km) segments is 2011.
