„I voted with confidence that the end of the year will bring unity, stability and a new government,” said Geoana, who has liberals and the Hungarian minority party on his side backing Sibiu mayor Klaus Johannis for prime minister and has pledged to have a legitimate government in place by Christmas.

The social democrat contender called on Romanians to come to the polls, saying the stake of this election goes beyond the name of one candidate or another, of one party or another.

„Romanians don’t only choose a president today, they also choose the path the country will follow for years to come,” Geoana said, adding he hopes people will cast ballots because the country’s future president should have wide popular support.

Geoana also said the future government’s top priority will be economic recovery.

About 18 million Romanian eligible voters are expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect their president for the next five years and will choose between incumbent President Traian Basescu and social democrat Mircea Geoana.

Whoever wins the vote Sunday will have to appoint a new prime minister to replace democrat liberal Emil Boc, whose government collapsed in a no-confidence vote mid-October.
