Romanian Opposition Supports Ratification Of EU Fiscal Stability Treaty

The opposition Social-Liberal Union (USL) agrees that Romania should sign and ratify the European Union fiscal stability treaty, and its MPs will attend the related Parliament discussions, social democrat leader Victor Ponta said Monday.

He pointed out that it is unnecessary for the opposition to sign a protocol with the current government. „The treaty is between Romania and the other EU member states, not between the ruling coalition and opposition.”

Ponta said USL requests a public debate on the consequences of signing the treaty, and expects it to be signed by Prime Minister Ungureanu and not President Traian Basescu.

Last week, the ruling coalition signed a protocol supporting the signing and ratification by Romania of the EU fiscal stability treaty. The document was signed by the heads of PDL, UDMR, UNPR and the national minorities group, and has room for the signatures of the USL leaders.
