Romanian Democrat Liberals To Launch President Traian Basescu’ Candidacy On Oct 17– Sources
The same sources said the event would most likely take place on October 17, adding Basescu will soon inform the party’s campaign staff on a final decision regarding the launch date.
Basescu’s candidacy will be launched along with the summoning of the national conference of the Democratic Liberal Party, which will bring together nearly 7,000 supporters.
Democrat liberals plan to collect nearly one million signatures to endorse Basescu’s candidacy, which will be subsequently submitted to the Central Electoral Office, along with his candidacy file.
Basescu on Saturday announced his candidacy for a second term in Sannicolau Mare, in Romanian western county of Timis, where he met with farmers in the country’s western region.
The head of state stressed he never thought he would announce his candidacy for re-election in Sannicolau Mare, adding, however, that he is convinced he did the right thing.
Basescu said repeatedly in recent months that he has not decided whether or not he would run for a second term as president. At one time, he said his candidacy depends on how the effects of the crisis in Romania evolve.
Romania holds the first round of presidential elections on November 22 and a second round on December 6.
