Romania Could Have A Third Carmaker, Besides Renault, Ford

Romania has potential, from all points of view, to attract a third carmaker, and there are prospects for a new auto industry investor to set up business in the country, Constantin Stroe, head of Romania’s carmakers association ACAROM, said Tuesday.

„The entry of a new carmaker will not affect Dacia’s position, as it happened with Ford, which stimulated the local auto industry,” Stroe, who is also vice-president of Romanian carmaker Dacia, said during the Mediafax Talks about Auto Industry conference.

Stroe didn’t give any details on a potential third carmaker making an entry on the Romanian market.

Romania currently has two carmakers, Renault-owned Dacia and Ford Romania, owned by U.S. Ford Motor Co.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz considered building a car factory in Romania in 2008 but decided to go for Hungary. Also around that time, France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen and Japan’s Mitsubishi were looking into opening car parts factories in Romania, but these plans have not come through.
