Romanian Tourism Min Wants To Privatize Government Hotels

Romanian Regional Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea said Tuesday, in a meeting with tour operators, that she wants to privatize the hotels managed by the State Protocol Patrimony Administration (RA-APPS).

The hotels should be sold through transparent public auctions, as soon as possible, said Udrea.

She added that Bulgaria sold the hotels on its seaside to German investors 20 years ago, whereas Romania’s hotels have ended up in the hands of „government friends” and today are in ruins.

Udrea also mentioned the official residences owned by the state and occupied by „former and current members of the nomenklatura,” who are not charged rent. She said these tenants should be compelled to buy the houses or move out.

The Government announced last week that it is preparing to sell some official buildings managed by RA-APPS, but not currently used for state business, through a public auction. The asking price will not go below the buildings’ market value, as determined by an evaluator.
