Presidency: 2019 Budget Does Not Take Economic Context Into Account

“The president of Romania once again wishes to point out that the 2019 budget is not destined to the development and progress of the country, but for the well-being of the ruling party. The 2019 budget, made out of PSD’s imagination and based on exaggerated optimistic numbers, represents a new proof of the lack of responsibility and the defective manner through which the social democrats decided to govern Romania,” she said.

The presidential representative also pointed out that the budget cuts local investments from state funds compared to 2018, and does not take into account current economic context, adding that the president will make a decision on whether to enact it in the coming days.

“President Klaus Iohannis emphasizes the fact that the budget passed by the ruling majority is full of surrealistic estimates and, in fact, does not take economic context account (…) For Romania to develop, it would have been necessary to allot funds towards real investment programs, not towards the party camarilla,” Dobrovolschi added.

Romania’s Parliament passed the 2019 state budget last week, two months into the year. The president can choose to enact the budget, send it back to the legislative body or challenge it at the Constitutional Court.
