This comes after recent data on the effects of the bill showed that hundreds of inmates who received early releases from prison went on to commit other offences in a short time, some of which were violent.

“There were many observations and discussions during TV shows of delinquents who were released earlier from prison based on sentence compensation, because prisons in Romania have a poor standard (…) I have to state clearly that the safety of Romanian citizens is non-negotiable, so we must make a number of conclusions and take measures accordingly so that a Romanian will not be afraid that a delinquent could invade his home,” said the Romanian president.

He also requested the cabinet to make an “urgent analysis” and find solutions for the situation.

“There is a search ongoing for thos to blame for the law. I will tell you clearly that this is not the solution. Searching for culprits never solved any problem. That is why I am requesting the Government to make a serious analysis and come up with solution within a short time,” Iohannis stated.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila met with Justice Minister Tudorel Toader on Wednesday to discuss the issue and find a solution in this regard, political sources told MEDIAFAX.
