The 300-meter long oil spill is close to the river bank, upstream from the Iron Gate I Dam.

Adrian Draghici, director of the water administration department in Mehedinti, said environment protection authorities took water samples and intervened to prevent the spill from spreading.

According to Draghici, preliminary information shows pollution was caused by the bilge water of a ship which crossed the river Wednesday afternoon. Draghici said the respective ship could not be identified due to heavy river traffic.
