Asked in press conference at the Romanian Government headquarters if the minimum wage increase is included in the draft budget project for 2019, the minister offered indirect answers hinting that the executive abandoned its plans for a December increase, but reassured that it would happen most probably in January.

“It will surely be included in what we do next year budget-wise, but I cannot tell you this today, there must be a Government decision regarding the date on which the minimum wage will be raised,” the minister said.

When asked if the increase is most likely to happen starting with January 1, 2019, the minister replied: “Categorically”.

The Romanian Government passed on November 9 an emergency decree which adopts the definition of a tiered minimum wage. It is speculated that the raise would be to a gross sum of RON2,080 per month globally and, for the first time, a higher RON2350 per month for jobs requiring higher education and for employees with at least 15 years’ work experience.
