The Romanian Government and Prince Charles of Wales’ foundation will launch the “Carpati” Project in communities in six Romanian counties, promoting organic agriculture, rural tourism and the conservation of the cultural patrimony of Romanian villages.

Official sources told MEDIAFAX Wednesday that in order to start up the project, a Secretariat for Durable Development has been set up, which will comprise specialists from the Ministries of Agriculture, Regional Development, Economy, Environment, Internal Affairs, Culture, Tourism and Foreign Affairs.

The Secretariat, which will be attached to the Government, will use the field experience provided by Prince Charles’ foundation to try and find financing solutions for a series of initiatives which could improve the standard of living of people in rural areas.

The pilot projects will be carried out in cooperation with the new decentralized services of the (at first) six communities’ local councils and will mainly focus on agriculture, tourism, forests, environment protection, financing and micro-loans, energy and education.

According to the sources, the Secretariat will put together a group of experts which will create durable development projects, using as a model Prince Charles’ foundation’s initiatives for the highlands of Scotland and the communities in the United Kingdom’s small islands. Prince Charles asked Romanian authorities last year to set up a body under the Government to initiate, support and coordinate durable development projects in the Carpathian Mountains.

Official sources told MEDIAFAX last week that Prince Charles of Wales is to return to Romania later this week and visit a number of traditional communities in Transylvania, and also meet, in Bucharest, with President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Emil Boc.

Prince Charles has in recent years become involved in projects to restore several Saxon villages.
