Moldovan President Demands Parliamentary Election Vote Recount

Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin asked the Constitution Court on Friday to order a new recount of the votes following parliamentary elections on Sunday which handed the victory to the incumbent communists and sparked violent protests, AFP reported.

The Court must “decide a new count of the votes expressed in legislative elections” held on April 5, according to as written statement of the Moldovan head of state.

The communists’ victory by an overwhelming majority led to three days of protests that turned violent on Tuesday. A new demonstration was scheduled for Friday at 10.00 a.m., but one hour later only a few dozens of protesters had gathered in front of the Moldovan government’s headquarters, acceding to an AFP correspondent.
