Melescanu said neither the Romanian state, nor the Ministry of Defense or its export company Romtehnica delivered weapons to the Georgian state.
"There is a Romanian company which obtained export license from ANCEX (the regulatory authority in export-import field – e.n.) long before the conflict in Georgia broke out, and which exported ammunition to Georgia,” the minister said.
"Romania, the Defense Ministry and its export company Romtehnica did not send weapons to Georgia. A Romanian private company exported weapons to a country which was not subject to any international or regional embargo, which was not involved in any conflict,” Melescanu said.
Former defense minister, Teodor Atanasiu, said mid August that if Romania sent machine guns to Georgia, then they must have come from Cugir, Romania’s sole producer of such weapons.
Romania did deliver weapons and ammunition to government authorities in Georgia, under the Charter of the United Nations, the international weapon export control regime and the EU code on weapon exports, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said mid August.
Abkhaz president Sergey Bagapsh had previously said that large quantities of weapons made in Romania and the U.S. were found in Georgian military deposits in Kodori Gorge, according to the Caucasian Knot, a website founded by the Russian association Memorial
Asked to comment, Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu said Romania did not export weapons to Georgia, but there will be check-ups to see whether any such exports were made using intermediaries.
Russian ambassador to Romania, Aleksandr Churilin, said in an open letter to MEDIAFAX Wednesday that weapons made in Romania were found in Georgia.
