Nica was proposed for the interim headship of the Interior Ministry on Jan 13 by Prime Minister Emil Boc, to replace Gabriel Oprea, who resigned that day.

Social democrat Oprea resigned after the party withdrew his political support because he had appointed people in key positions at the ministry without consulting party leaders. Oprea later resigned from the Social Democratic Party as well.

On Monday, the Social Democratic Party’s executive committee decided unanimously to appoint party vice-president Liviu Dragnea for interior minister.
