Romanian President Says Constitution Is Ambiguous, Needs Revision

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Monday evening in a TV show that the country’s Constitution needs to be revised and its errors and ambiguities need to be cleared, and the new center-left coalition government has a majority large enough to allow it to look into the fundamental law.

"The Constitution needs to be revised. There are ambiguities in the Constitution and we’ve made the Constitutional Court an arbiter of daily political life,” Basescu said.

He added there is a need to look into the Constitutional Court’s decision and amend the ambiguities in the fundamental law.

"To continue to have ambiguities in the country’s fundamental law would be a mistake especially since the government has such a large majority,” Basescu said.

The head of state also said the government needs to make a priority out of the Criminal and Civil Codes and their respective procedure codes and the justice sector needs to be treated with maximum seriousness.
