Bucharest deputy mayor Robert Ionescu said they are working on a draft decision banning motorcyclists’ access to the center of Bucharest.

The document will be submitted for debate in the Bucharest General Council, in a bid to meet complaints by countless citizens against the nighttime noise made by motorcycles, mopeds and ATVs on the streets.

Ionescu went on saying that fines would be issued for motorcycle, ATV or moped owners who make too much noise.

In addition, the decision would find alternative routes so that motorcycle riders can get from one area to another without difficulty.

Vice mayor Robert Ionescu explained that limiting the access of motorcycles on the large boulevards is desirable as these boulevards are speedways, while finding by-routes would prevent “irresponsible drivers from speeding”.

Another item to be included in the decision draft prohibits the access of ATVs on any street in Bucharest, as these vehicles are designed for the off-road.

The document will be presented to Bucharest’s general mayor Sorin Oprescu, and then submitted for debate to Bucharest’s General Council.

The mayoralty’s intention to ban motorcyclists’ access in Bucharest is considered to be an abuse, according to a statement of the Romanian Motorcyclists Association (AMR).

“We consider that any infringement must be sanctioned as stipulated by the law, however the citizens’ rights to drive their motorcycles on public roads should not be limited,” the motorcyclists said.

AMR spokesperson, Cosmin Frasineanu, said he does not believe that motorcyclists’ access in the centre of Bucharest will be banned, but such a threat coming from the vice mayor is abnormal.
