Romanian prosecutors with the National Anticorruption Department sent to trial eight people for alleged illegal transactions facilitated by transfers of football players to foreign clubs, causing overall damages of $11.5 million.

The prosecutors deferred to justice Gheorghe Copos – former president and owner of the football club Rapid Bucuresti, Ioan Becali, former agent, Victor Becali – agent, Mihai Stoica – former manager of the football club Otelul Galati, Jean Padureanu – president of Gloria Bistrita, Gheorghe Popescu – former employee of the company “Becali sport”, Gheorghe Netoiu – former shareholder of the football club Dinamo, and Cristian Borcea – executive manager of Dinamo.
The prosecutors say their actions caused damage of $1.5 million to the state budget and of over $10 million to four football clubs.
The file presented by the National Anticorruption Department focuses on 12 transfers of Romanian footballers playing for Dinamo, Rapid, Gloria Bistrita and Otelul Galati to foreign football clubs, between 1999 and 2005.
