New Schengen Rules Won’t Apply to Romania, Bulgaria – President

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Friday a minute adopted during the European Council meeting states that the new regulations aimed to reinforce the governance of the Schengen Area will not apply to Romania and Bulgaria.

According to Basescu, EU state presidents and prime ministers talked about reintroducing internal border checkups in exceptional situations, considering that the Schengen border is under huge migration pressure.

Early June, The European Parliament adopted a report by MEP Carlos Coelho recommending the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area.

The EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which recently adopted the conclusions on the full application of the Schengen acquis by Romania and Bulgaria, will resume talks on their Schengen entry in September this year.
