Romania’s Football Federation (FRF) on Wednesday appointed Razvan Lucescu at the helm of the national team, following the dismissal of Victor Piturca.
Razvan Lucescu Named Romania Coach
Stefan Iovan, Dan Apolozan and Bogdan Stelea were named secondary coaches.
Lucescu, 40, former goalkeeper and son of successful football coach Mircea Lucescu, coached Romanian first league sides FC Brasov (2003-2004 and 2007 - present) and Rapid Bucharest (2004-2007).
Lucescu managed to win the Romanian Cup twice while at Rapid and headed the team to UEFA Cup’s quarterfinals.
Mircea Lucescu father was FRF’s first choice for the national team, but he declined the offer in favor of a renewed two-year deal with Ukrainian side Shaktar Donetsk.
FRF recently decided to terminate the contract of coach Victor Piturca after a disappointing run of results that seem to have ruined Romania’s chances to play in the next year’s World Cup.
Piturca will get EUR300,000 upon contract termination.
