Lupescu said Lucescu is "the right man for the job" and wished the latter good luck at the helm of the national team. Moreover, Lupescu said they were glad to find a new coach for the national team ten days before the deadline.

The federation on Wednesday appointed Lucescu at the helm of the national team, following the dismissal of Victor Piturca.

Stefan Iovan, Dan Apolozan and Bogdan Stelea were named secondary coaches.

Lucescu, 40, former goalkeeper and son of successful football coach Mircea Lucescu, coached Romanian first league sides FC Brasov (2003-2004 and 2007 – present) and Rapid Bucharest (2004-2007).

Lucescu managed to win the Romanian Cup twice while at Rapid and headed the team to UEFA Cup’s quarterfinals.

Mircea Lucescu father was the federation’s first choice for the national team, but he declined the offer in favor of a renewed two-year deal with Ukrainian side Shaktar Donetsk.

The federation recently decided to terminate the contract of coach Victor Piturca after a disappointing run of results that seem to have ruined Romania’s chances to play in the next year’s World Cup.

Piturca will get EUR300,000 upon contract termination.
