Education Pact Sparks Clash Btw Romanian Social Democrats, President

Romania’s leftist opposition Social-Democratic Party (PSD) said it would not sign the Education Pact proposed by President Traian Basescu unless 7% of gross domestic product is earmarked for the education system, according to a press statement issued Tuesday by the party’s department for education.

The social democrats pointed out that the debates on the education laws to be held Wednesday at the presidency’s headquarters might turn into sheer mockery unless the National Education Pact establishes both a medium and a long-term strategy.

Ana Birchall, head of PSD’s department for education, said that the social democrats proposed drawing up a frame-law on education, namely a package of laws to include the laws on the pre-university and university education systems, the statute of the teaching staff, the law on the salary system, the law on decentralization, as well as the law on the quality of the education system.

The social democrats consider that the Education Pact proposed by Basescu "is shallow and not very clear."

Basescu invited the leaders of parliament parties to attend the debates on the National Education Plan to be held Wednesday, at the presidency’s headquarters.
