Public sector employees already had their wages reduced by 25% this summer, after the Government implemented a set of austerity measures.

Finance Minister Gheorghe Ialomitianu arrived at the Government to hold talks with Prime Minister Emil Boc on the measures to be taken to solve the problem.

Former Finance Minister Sebastian Vladescu, who was dismissed in September, said he would continue to grant wage bonuses to ministry staff until the new unitary wage law came into force, as the elimination of wage bonuses before the enforcement of the new law would in effect mean a 60% salary cut.

Following protests in Bucharest, hundreds of public finance sector employees across the country ceased work and rallied outside public finance departments.

Sed Lex union leader Vasile Marica said Wednesday that about 30,000 employees in the public administration sector will take to the streets, adding unionists will not be able to control their spontaneous rallies.
