Romania has not seen a jobless rate of 7.1% since April 2004, when the unemployment was at 7.4%.

The total number of unemployed people was at 653,939 at the end of October, from 625,140 a month earlier.

The rise in unemployment was due to layoffs in the latest period, as well as to a lack of vacant jobs, ANOFM said. „Moreover, many employers preferred to close their companies or suspend their operations,” it said.

In October 2008, the jobless rate was at 4%.
