Romania Jan-Nov ’09 Trade Gap Narrows To EUR8.7B

Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR8.7 billion in January-November 2009, from EUR21.94 billion in the same period the year earlier, the National Statistics Institute said Monday.

Exports were down 16% on the year to EUR26.7 billion in January-November last year, while imports fell 34% to EUR35.4 billion.

Vehicles made up for the bulk of exports and imports in the first eleven months of 2009, amounting to 42.8% of overall exports and 33.6% of the imports, the data showed.

In November 2009, Romania’s trade deficit was of EUR804 million, compared with EUR1.77 billion in the same month of 2008.

Exports were at EUR2.7 billion in November last year, up by 0.4% compared with the month earlier. Year-on-year, exports were up 6.7% in November 2009.

Imports fell 2.5% on the month to EUR3.5 billion in November 2009 and were down 18.4% on the year.

Exports are calculated exclusive of costs, insurance and freight fees, but imports are calculated including such costs.

Romania’s trade deficit was up 3.4% in 2008 to EUR22.5 billion, from EUR21.7 billion in 2007, with the exports growing at a higher pace than imports.
